Ty Buchanan is living on the peaceful grounds of St. Monica's, far away from the glamorous life he led as a rising trial lawyer for a big L.A. firm. Recovering from the death of his fiancée and a false accusation of murder, Buchanan has found his previous ambitions unrewarding. Now he prefers offering legal services to the poor and the under-represented, from his "office" at local coffee bar The Freudian Sip. A mysterious woman with a six year old daughter comes to him for help. She's being illegally evicted from a downtown transient hotel, an interest represented by his old law firm and former best friend, Al Bradshaw. Buchanan won't back down. He's going to fight for the woman's rights.
But then she ends up dead, and the case moves from the courtroom to the streets. Determined to find the killer and protect the little girl, who has no last name and no other family, Buchanan finds he must depend on skills he never needed in the employ of a civil law firm.

In Try Dying (2007), L.A. trial lawyer Ty Buchanans fiance' was killed, and Ty himself was brought up on murder charges. Now hes trying to put that disastrous period in his life behind him. Hes living in a trailer on the grounds of a monastery, easing back into professional life, when a case involving a woman andher young daughter, who are being tossed out of their apartment by an unscrupulous building owner, draws him backintothe dangerous world he thought hed left behind. The case seems a simple enough matter, but soon after Ty makes it clear he will pursue his clients rights, the woman is found dead, and now Ty must protect the little girl while trying to find out whos behind her mothers murder. Bell builds on the numerous strengths of the first novel, firmly positioning Buchanan as a strong series lead and once again telling a story that is equal parts crime drama and human emotion. A solid second installment in what should prove to be a popular series.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2008, American Library Association.)
