        The Feminist Bird Club (FBC) was created in 2016 to "amplify grassroots solutions to issues in birding and to break down barriers," specifically, to include people traditionally outside of the birding elite and to support social justice. Aware of the massive environmental and social struggles of our time, FBS founder Adams and Anderson, community habitat coordinator for the National Wildlife Federation, provide pathways for connections between birding and the community as well as small-scale solutions to problems that can seem overwhelming. The principles of the FBC are stated up front, along with a glossary of discussed terms (both activist and birding). In four chapters that cover birding basics--being a better birder, birding with care, and birding together--the authors discuss how to be a birder and the philosophies pertaining to being in nature, being aware of and kind to other birders, and being cognizant of the larger environmental issues for which birds can be a bellwether. Journaling prompts promote further reflection from the reader, and numerous illustrations provided by the FBC community enliven the text. This important discussion at the intersection of the joy birds provides and the inclusion of all in that joy will make even seasoned birders think.
