Think with your heart and prepare to die . . . for you have been Chosen.

Thomas Hunter, supreme commander of the Forest Guard, has seen a great evil decimate much of his beautiful world. With a dwindling army and an epic threat, Thomas is forced to supplement his fighters with new recruits ages 16 and 17. From thousands, four will be chosen to lead a special mission.

Unknown to Thomas, the chosen four are redirected to a different endgame. They must find the seven lost Books of History before the Dark One. For these seven books have immense power over the past, present, and future, controlling not only the destiny of their world . . . but that of ours as well.

The first in aYA extension of Dekkers best-selling Circle series for adults, marketed primarily toChristian audiences, this briskly pacedadventurestarts with a football game. The game will select four new leaders from among teens who have just joined the Forest Guard to fight against the Hordedisfigured beings created when people fail to bathe regularly in sacred lake waters. Rejected for service, Johnis takes the ball over the finish line anyway, making him one of the four who are sent on a quest. Along the way, the teen learns he can communicate with mythical creatures and stumbles upon a mission of even greater urgency.Thistitles publisher is best known for its Christian-interest titles, butwhilesome readers may perceive subtexts in the teens monotheistic religion and in the plotselemental clash between good and evil, Dekkersinventive approach to these themes will appeal to genre readers of many faiths.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2008, American Library Association.)

Johnis is a lover, not a fighter. Nevertheless, he must prove himself by joining the outnumbered in a last stand against the Horde. It's easy to tell whom to trust: good guys are white, cute, and fuzzy, while the forces of evil are smelly and have "long, nasty dreadlocks." Rushed pacing also detracts from the story.
