"This sparkling novel starts with high energy and unique characters that move from one surprise to another." —Ann Garvin, USA TODAY bestselling author
All it takes is the right book to turn a Book Hater into a Book Lover...
That was what Elliot—the beloved co-owner of Over the Rainbow Bookshop—believed before his untimely passing. He always had the perfect book suggestion for the self-proclaimed Book Hater. Now his grief-ridden business partner, Irma, has agreed to sell the cozy Over the Rainbow to condo developers.
But others won't give up the bookshop without a fight. When Irma breaks the news to her daughters, Bree and Laney, and Elliot's romantic partner, Thom, they are aghast. Over the Rainbow has been Bree and Laney's sanctuary since childhood, and Thom would do anything to preserve Elliot's legacy. Together they conspire to save the bookshop, even if it takes some snooping, gossip and minor sabotage.
Filled with humor, family hijinks and actual reading recommendations, The Book Haters' Book Club is the ideal feel-good read. It's a love letter to everyday heroes—those booksellers and librarians dedicated to putting the right books in the right hands every day.

Bookstore Over the Rainbow has been a staple in the neighborhood for 30 years, but now that co-owner Elliot has passed, it appears as though Irma, his business partner, can't sell out fast enough. Worse still, she is selling to condo developers. Irma's daughter, Bree, is devastated, as she had always assumed that she would be the next owner of the Rainbow. Irma refuses to explain her decision and is determined to go through with the clearly unfavorable sale. Bree is just as determined to stop it. But Bree spends most of the book crying and wringing her hands and doesn't seem to have a solid plan. Luckily, lesser secondary characters have that under control. There is a lot of family drama that only tangentially relates to books. Narrator Tanya Eby does her best using a variety of vocal inflections to represent the characters, and her narrative voice is quite soothing. Even so, she is unable to compensate for the uneven tone, pacing, and plotting of the story. VERDICT Anthony's (The Kids Are Gonna Ask) latest has an interesting premise but a bumpy execution. A nice choice for listeners looking for new book recommendations, but an otherwise optional purchase.--Jodi L. Israel

Anthony (The Kids Are Gonna Ask, 2020) returns with a sparkling novel that finds joy in spite of regret. Irma Bedford has been the owner of Over the Rainbow, a bookshop in small-town Minnesota, for many years. Her business partner, Elliot, has passed away, and Irma is intent on selling the store to a corporate building group. But Elliot's romantic partner, Thom, and Irma's daughters, Laney and Bree, are not going to let the bookstore go easily. Bree has made a career out of her job there, and while Laney is reluctant at first, she warms to Thom and Bree's ideas. The three band together on a grassroots campaign to save the shop. Along the way, all three have revelations about their own life journeys as family secrets are revealed. Elliot also weighs in from beyond the grave, and snippets of his newsletter for "book haters" help solidify his voice. Anthony includes a slew of real recommendations sourced from her own friends, bookstore employees, and librarians, giving readers a chance to head off on their own paths.
